A late 19th century bronze figure of a greyhound, his front leg raised and head turned backwards as he grooms his coat. A finely detailed figure with a dark brown patina, mounted on a base incised with a decorative design of swirling lines and the artist’s name, ‘CHEMIN’.

 

Joseph Francois Victor Chemin (1825 - 1901) was born in Paris, France on August 25th 1825. Chemin was one of Antoine Louis Barye's successful students. He first exhibited at the Salon of 1857 and exhibited regularly until 1894. He produced mainly models of foxes, hounds, hares, racehorses and a few casts of monkeys.
He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Paris in 1901.
