Literature

Sally Mitchell, The Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, 1985.

Harry Hall (1813-1882) was an English equestrian painter who was one of the foremost racehorse portraitists of his time.
He was born in Cambridge and began working as an artist at Tattersalls, working on a number of their sporting publications, becoming chief artist of 'The Field'. He was a prolific painter and much of his work was subsequently engraved. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy with portrait work but his career became firmly established as an equestrian painter following his exhibit in 1845 with 'Suffolk cob from Newmarket'. He worked from his base in Newmarket from 1846 and frequently took commissions across England and Europe.
