From the collection of the historic Kilmany House in Fife, this fine horse is portrayed standing against the soft hues of a coastal countryside setting. The remarkable sheen of the horse's coat has been skillfully observed by the artist. Signed 'E. Brown' and dated 1862 (bottom centre left).
Edwin Brown (1814-1891) worked mainly in the Coventry (Warwickshire) area, painting horses, dogs, farm animals and hunting scenes and landscapes, mainly for local families. One such family was the Warners of Bullington and one of his paintings features a horse and dog with Bullington Church in the background. Brown had a long and successful career, with paintings recorded between 1823 and 1877.
