Private collection, Dorset

A terrier, named 'Nip' (name inscribed on the reverse), sitting in a stable interior. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame.

 

Evelyn Augusta Hickman was a sculptor and painter, born in Newport, Isle of Wight in 1859, the daughter of an army officer, William T. Hickman and Annie De Courcy Dashwood.  She exhibited regularly from 1909 onwards, including at the Exhibition of Fair Women (International Society of Sculpture, Painters and Gravers  London, 1909) with her portrait of Miss Lillian Maude and the Tenth Annual Exhibition of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers (London), 1910 with Whistling Boy. She exhibited "whistling Boy' in bronze at London's  Royal Academy Exhibition of 1922, recoded in the catalogue under no. 1328. She is recorded as living in Chelsea, London in 1911 and then South Kensington where she lived until her death in 1943.
